Need for Speed Carbono
The return of the car simulators? legend. Need for speed is undoubtedly the most famous saga and it is sold all around the world, innovating in technology and realism, besides of the great number of famous car brands both sport ones and urban ones.
This time, after the acclaimed Underground2, the goal of the game is to form a band of illegal racers, something like ?The fast and the Furious?, and race around the city competing with other clans. Races go from the classic ones ?the same that entertained many players in the previous editions?, to the new modes such as group races. Each driver has a specific skill and we have to skillfully choose whom to use in each case.
The game control may be is a bit complicated, as regards giving the idea of driving a car at 200 km/h; but, eventually, you end up getting used to it. This new version for Nintendo Wii has two driving options: with Wiimote, the revolutionary console controller, or the traditional joystick, moving it from left to right, and speeding up with the stick up front.
Light effects are really amazing, specially to enhance the details that give the idea of speed. Graphics are very fluent and well designed, in spite of not having the level of polygonal details that the version for Xbox 360 has. Anyhow, this version as good as the other ones, not even the one for PC.
With over 50 cars to choose, this Need for Speed offers a great variety. In order to make the selection simpler, cars are divided into three categories ? Sports, Japanese and American. The main news as regards the game?s dynamics is that we can customize each part of the car, be it ailerons, exhaust pipes, rims or rear spoilers. From this the name Carbono.
Asphalt: Urban GT 2
This is a known game that had many versions for all consoles, even for the eccentric mobile phone Nokia N-gage. In fact, this mobile version is one of the best ones of Gameloft ?the company that produces the series?, since it was completely different to the rest of the platforms, and it even had particular options and an exclusive game mode for mobile phones.
The novelty for Nintendo DS turned into a disappointment, since the Asphalt version, which came out this month for console, is exactly the same as to that of the N-Gage. News disappointed the console?s fans a little bit, since car games are the ones that are running short. The only one that had been released up to now was the hackneyed Super Mario Kart.
Garneloft decided to wait almost a year to release its OS version, which seems to have many improvements as regards graphic fluency, due to the console?s power, obviously superior to the Nokia?s platform. However, the game mode is quite similar to other similar titles, even to that of Need for Speed. The only game mode that is really interesting is the one named Evolution, where we get a car, and as we advance in the game, we modify it.
Another feature to point out is the easiness when driving, which is smooth and precise, and it does not give the idea of losing control.
Disney movies have undoubtedly applied a strategy in the market as regards movies? video games. So far each Pixar?s edited film has had its video game. Even the project gets more and more ambitious, for example, ?The Incredibles?, in which the concept of the game is totally different from the one of the movie. And it even has different dialogues and scenes.
This time is the turn of Lightning McQueen, Mater the Tow Truck and his fellows. That is to say, the friendly characters of Cars make their debut for the Nintendo Wii?s console at the same time the movie is released in DVD format all around the world. The Wii?s revolutionary control makes driving fluent and dynamic, creating a new sensation when playing with a car simulator. The days of turning the car with the analogue joystick are over, and so far all the driving games use Nintendo Wii.
You can choose the characters of the movie in order to compete in 20 urban circuits and five more in high-speed tracks. The videos and graphics are as good as the one in the movie, which make us feel inside the movie. The soundtrack is also very good, and it was specially made for the game by the same musician that composed the melodies of all Disney/ Pixar?s movies ?Randy Newman.
The only thing to criticize in this game is the lack of innovation as regards structural level, since it is exactly the same as to the Playstation 2 version. This happens with most games for Nintendo Wii, since the console is still a very new and still developers have not been able to design projects from scratch. The most optimistic ones believe that by mid-2007 the number of games specially created for Wii will surpass those of the Playstation 2.
